Are hormones wreaking havoc on your sleep?
You’re in the prime of your life. You’ve worked hard and advanced your career, maybe built a family, and you’ve passed through the striving years of young adulthood. But now you’re exhausted, irritable, and your sleep has betrayed you.
You might fall asleep easily because you’re so wrecked, but sometime in the middle of the night you’re wide awake. You’re desperate to get more rest, but it can be hours before sleep returns, if it does at all. So you get up as usual and trudge through the day, making it work like you always do and hoping that tonight will be different.
Lack of sleep affects every part of a woman’s life.
Women, especially in midlife, are the lode bearers. Oftentimes we’re raising kids, working, and managing aging parents all at the same time, keeping everything afloat at our own expense. Then hormones start to fluctuate and insomnia sets in, often in the middle of the night when our thoughts spiral to all sorts of bad places. You’re exhausted, irritable, and barely getting by, let alone enjoying everything you’ve worked so hard to achieve. And you’re worried about the long-term health implications of all that lost sleep.
It can feel like your body has betrayed you.
You may find yourself searching for supplements, quick fixes, or medications—but it’s hard to know what’s legitimate and nothing seems to truly solve the issue.

What to know about Sleep Therapy for Midlife Women
Frequently Asked Questions
What is different about sleep in midlife women?
As hormones start to fluctuate during perimenopause (the years between prime fertility and menopause), sleep can be affected in a number of ways. Some women wake up frequently due to hot flashes. Others wake up seemingly for no reason at all, feeling wide awake and struggling to return to sleep. Hormone fluctuations also cause fatigue, irritability, physical agitation, brain fog and other symptoms that can affect sleep. When trying to cope with sleep deficits, women often change their schedules and routines in ways that unknowingly prolong the sleep issues and they develop anxiety around sleep that worsens the problem. CBT-I for women in midlife helps to correct the behavioral and cognitive patterns that keep women stuck in cycles of insomnia and non-restorative sleep.
Why is CBT-I preferable to medication for sleep?
CBT-I addresses the root causes of sleep problems whereas medication addresses the symptoms. When the medication runs out, the sleep problems often return. CBT-I works to correct the behaviors and thoughts that keep you stuck in insomnia cycles. You’ll learn skills that last a lifetime.
How many sessions does it take?
In most cases, treatment consists of an evaluation session and 3-6 therapy sessions. If you are taking certain medications that have to be tapered slowly under medical supervision or if you have other medical or mental health conditions, treatment might require a slower pace or additional sessions. Once we meet for the evaluation, I can give you an informed estimate of how many sessions you’ll need.
Do I have to stop taking medication to work with you?
No. If you want to stop taking sleep medication—and your physician approves—I can help you learn to sleep without medication. However, some people find that the combination of medication and therapy is preferable in their situation. Once we determine the cause of your sleep problems, we will create an appropriate treatment plan in consultation with your physician or pharmacologist..
Do you prescribe medication?
No. Psychologists do not prescribe medication. Medication for depression, anxiety or other underlying mood problems can be helpful if those symptoms make it harder to follow through with our treatment plan.. Occasionally, sleep medications may also be helpful. If we decide that it makes sense to add medication, I can refer you to a prescribing doctor or NP and we will work together on your treatment plan.
